How does the automation actually place trades?

You connect your broker via a secure API, choose or build a strategy, and Relay places orders directly in your own broker account based on that strategy's rules. You can pause, adjust or stop at any time.

Do you ever take custody of my money?

Never. Your funds and positions always stay in your own broker account. MadMoney only sends orders through the broker connection you authorise.
